Most have already heard by now of the proposed regulation of alcohol sales in Wrigleyville bars during the upcoming Cubs’ playoffs. See the story here. The voluntary move would ban the sale of alcohol in bars around Wrigley Field after the 7th inning, and resume when the game ends. With a team that seems to have an unusual fondness for extra innings, this could be more than just an hour break. We’ve been hearing opinions from outraged fans and bar owners alike, as well as concerned and likely sleep-deprived Wrigleyville residents. It is no secret that alcohol tends to fuel a lot of the routy partying. What needs to be examined is the way other championships have been handled in the past. Did the onslaught of car tipping during the Jordan era warrant any similar ban? Would such a move just cause more trouble? The reason this team’s success has become such cause for concern is that it is unfamiliar territory. The last time the Cubs won the World Series, the only thing to tip were horse and buggies. In theory, curbing the sale of alcohol at the end of the game is a good idea. In practice, it remains to be seen.
