Remember that TV show “Just Shoot Me.” Yeah, the one with David Spade basically from what I recall it was a sitcom based around employees of a fashion magazine. Doesn’t really matter, but what somehow worked its way our of the recesses of my brain was a scene from the show probably retained during an insomniatic (I know, that’s not a word) staring contest with the TV back in the ’90s. The dusty scene was of the magazine being put together on a giant cork board where all the pages could be moved around to make sure that they looked ok next to each other. Classically, two of the employees were arguing about what should go where, probably that elf and one of the other forgettable characters. This was interesting, of course someone gets paid to make sure that there isn’t a neon pink ad next to a predominantly deep red page.
But then the difference between advertisements on the street and in a magazine is that there isn’t someone paid to do such things as to make sure there isn’t a billboard for liposuction next to a weight watchers meeting location.
Yet, as will be explored further in future posts, the CTA clearly doesn’t care what this looks like.

Just shoot me is a great show, they play re-runs on TBS. I am probably in the minority here though, so shoot me…sorry bad joke.

That method of laying things out to make sure that everything flowed well through the magazine was first done by Alexey Brodovitch, the art director for Harper’s Bazaar back in the 30s through 50s-ish.
If you are actually interested in that/him at all, I’ve got a book on him, as well as a pretty awesome paper I wrote that I got a solid ‘A’ on, despite my teacher’s picky grading.
