Coming from the suburbs, animal shelters are in abundance. Seems as if each town has their own and continually obtain and adopt out. What about Chicago? After some research I uncovered a number of shelters throughout the city, a lot of which are located on the north-side. After contacting The Anti-Cruelty Society located near Ohio and Lasalle streets, I gained further insight on what goes on there. They offer a number of oppurtunities for volunteer work. Just like the suburban shelters, they take in a lot of dogs and cats turning them right around for adoption. This is also coming from someone who is heavily in favor of shelters over pet stores. Not only are dogs and even cats from pet stores way over priced, they continually encourage the development of puppy mills in Amercia.

I would LOVE to volunteer at an animal shelter. The only problem is is that I would come home with a different dog every single day. As an animal lover, it is so difficult to turn down an animal in need of help. I can’t even walk into a pet store anymore because I get so depressed. However, I give a lot of credit to those non-kill shelters. God bless them!

Getting attached is the worst thing. I’ve been down that road many times walking into a pet store and seeing all the little dogs hoping they don’t have to spend another night in those little cages. As much as it kills me to think about where those puppies may have come from, I have a bit more sympathy for the ones neglected at the shelters. They deserve a second chance. This being a mentality I have gained from living in a family surrounded by dogs.

I love dogs and I think that people that do abuse dogs are terrible people. That commercial on TV always gets me everytime. I have to turn the channel because I feel so bad for the animals and I can’t even understand why some people would abuse the animals. When I get out of college I will definatly be donating to charities that relate to animal abuse.

I think there are people that buy dogs thinking they are just like a pet in a cage. Taking on a dog or even cat is a bigger responsibility than some think. After they discover this they choose to neglect them. A friend of mine recently adopted an American pitbull terrier and she was left in a truck-yard not long after having puppies. They have that scar on their life, but most are young enough to get that second chance.

I would agree that a lot of people have no idea the responsibility that they are taking on when they decide to get a dog.
