This was an interview done with a 23 year old named Anthony Magnifico, who was a volunteered to work for the Obama campaign in Iowa. This was the first time he had ever volunteered and some of his duties involved calling potential supporters and independent voters as well. He helped set up events and even got to meet Obama himself. He also contributed by donating to the campaign as well. He described this as an overall great experience and he ended up getting a job with the campaign as a result.

Recently I visited an animal shelter and it was very hard to be there for more than 10 minutes. Not only were the smells overbearing, but seeing hundreds of caged animals was just too much. Typically animal shelters are not very clean, packed with animals in small cages, and they smell.

Recently I read about an animal shelter in Hastings Minn that was quite different from any animal shelter I’ve ever seen. The goal there was to make it as luxurious as possible so that when people come to play with the animals they stay longer hence more likely they would adpot. The shelter’s socialization rooms contain fireplaces and high definition TV’s, which make it all the more comfortable for guests. The shelter is designed to be more like a home rather than a shelter. In addition to being very clean it also has air filters that eliminate all the odors. Animal Ark sounds like a dream for both the animals and guests.

We all know the economy is bad and it’s affecting everyone, but what people don’t realize is that it’s also affecting animals. Recently there was an article on yahoo about how animals shelters are turning away animlas because there is not enough room. At the Branson Tri-Lakes Area Humane Society, the drop off rate of animals is 95% while the adoption rate is 5%. People are dropping off animals everyday, some just letting them loose on the shelter’s grounds. At the shelter, the smaller animals have a much greater chance of getting adopted because it’s much easier to take care of them.

Meanwhile, it’s very important to spread the word about adoption. There is no need to go out and buy expensive breeds while perfectly good animals are waiting for a home. Animals can be adopted every Saturday at the Petsmart in Springfield.

Recently an animal shelter in Bloomingdale was raided and was found was horrific. Animals were not being taken care of properly, neglected, and an unknown level in the shelter was found with animals that were never seen to the public. These animals were being abused and neglected.

Things like this seem to happen all the time; Almost Heaven Kennel in Pennsylvania was recently raided and what police found was beyond cruel: 800-1000 animals living in filthy conditions and no fresh water was available to them. In addition, a freezer was found with 65 carcasses which were mostly puppies. The owner not only lost his license but charged with animal cruelty.

A place that should normally be for the help of these animals is now causing more turmoil for them. The owner needs to be punished, however what will happen to all these neglected animals? Will they be moved to another shelter and be forced to undergo the same situation?

The animals in need of a home in Chicago has decreased significantly since the year 1997. There are a number of organizations in Chicago that contribute to helping with this problem. If anyone is considering getting a pet, I would strongly urge them to consider adoption. Such organizations such as PAWS Chicago are wonderful for anyone considering adoption because they don’t only have animals that have been abandoned, but they also have puppies and kittens.

Because of the recent economic situation, a lot of homes have been abandoned. With that, many animals have been left behind and animal shelters have become overpopulated. Perfectly good dogs have to be put to sleep instead of being adopted.  Dog shelters receive dogs everyday from foreclosed or abandoned homes not to mention all the animals that do not even make it to shelters.

The month of October is considered American Humane Adopt a Dog month and sponsors such as FetchDog.com make possible and easy for any dog lover to find a pet. Especially now is the best time to adopt because as we move forward to the colder season it will be much more difficult for these animals to survive.  Why not change the life of an innocent animal?
