  If you’ve walked by the Smoke Shack on Halsted at Altgeld recently, you’ve noticed a new mural going up on the wall next door.

  

  The artist responsible is keeping it low-key; staying out of my pictures, not giving me his name or even his graf alias. But he did tell me that this is what he does for a living- traveling the nation, working for advertisers. He has the rights to this wall, so he decided to do a free just-for-fun portrait of Obama.

  So what if Obama doesn’t win? He told me the mural would still stay up. “It’s only as much of a political statement as you make it. It’s just a portrait, I’m not telling people to vote or anything. I hope he wins,” he added, laughing. “I’ve got a lot of money bet on him.”

  He also gave me a heads up about one of his commercial pieces at the intersection of Ashland, Elston, and Armitage. I didn’t have to look long before recognizing his style in this Rémy Martin ad:

  The new advertising for the Chicago Tribune seems to be everywhere.  Prior to that, and in addition, the recent  redesign it underwent was meant to spur readers.  This make-over was less than a year after the last one.

  But what of these signs posted all over the city?  Because, those are part of the redesign as well.  It says so right there:

  

  For those who can't tell in the picture what it says on top of the words "Chicago Tribune" is "It's a Whole New Day."

  Yet, children, did we learn nothing from the Tortoise and the Hare?  For those who don’t recall, the hare looses.  Negative connotaion for those ’speedy’ readers taken too seriously?  Possibly, but it seems odd and worth mulling over.

  I’ve always found it odd how people can pay for something to advertise for the place that they bought it from.  Sure, people like showing off that they can afford a certain brand or are just plain cool enough to have a retro logo tee.

  Sure, there are different meanings to what people wear across their chests (or bags… or butts).  But what’s the point?

  So if you think its cool to wear shirts that say the name of whatever store you bought it at, remember that you’re paying to advertise for them.

  Maybe its for a cause or your beliefs, but its still paying to advertise.

  Continuing with the ideas from my previous post bloggers point out some interesting things: Are McCain’s ads ‘Dangerous’ (as one of his anti-Obama ads is titled)?  Is Obama overspending by advertising in new and more ways?

  Let’s play word association with the advertisements from each of the presidential campaigns.

  I asked a few politically-minded acquaintances for their responses to only the advertisements they have seen or things they had heard said about the different campaign’s advertising.

  McCain’s ads: “shady” “I’m a hero!” “can you trust Barack Hussein Obama?” “hate politics” “sepia”

  Obama’s ads: “fucking everywhere” “change” “is there a word for ‘inspirational but lacking substance’?” “bland” “not sepia”

  For those who missed it the presidential debate was last night.  In the past weeks both campaigns have been fairly slanderous towards the other.  McCain in particular is more vocal with negative commentaries and was expected to bring some of that Obama-bashing to the town-hall meeting style debate, where McCain is said to thrive.  But neither things happened, McCain didn’t bash Obama to his face, and though both campaigns have published statements claiming that they won, the polls don’t lie.

  Tonight, on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer (who moderated the first debate), a part of the conversation about swing states included talking about the TV ads that are running in each of those states.  Overall the correspondents on the show seemed to say that about a third of Obama’s ads were based on bashing McCain, versus to about half of McCain’s ads that have been dedicated to beating on Obama.

  Flipping through the RedEye on Thursday some of you may have noticed something a bit odd about one of the ads…

  

  It is a completely Spanish ad.  Thinking it was odd, I called the advertising department of the RedEye.  The receptionist seemed to think that the Spanish printing of the ad was intentional because they are “trying to reach that market.”

  Further investigation, and a chat with ad representative Anna Mac from RedEye pointed out that it was, indeed, a misprint.  She said it was the ad that ran in Hoy and that Friday’s paper, she told me several times, would have the corrected ad.

  I was just now reminded of this conversation while flipping through today’s edition of the RedEye… and no TJ Maxx ad, English or Spanish, to be found.

  Forty-four across in the crossword is ’sip.’

  Remember that TV show “Just Shoot Me.”  Yeah, the one with David Spade basically from what I recall it was a sitcom based around employees of a fashion magazine.  Doesn’t really matter, but what somehow worked its way our of the recesses of my brain was a scene from the show probably retained during an insomniatic (I know, that’s not a word) staring contest with the TV back in the ’90s.  The dusty scene was of the magazine being put together on a giant cork board where all the pages could be moved around to make sure that they looked ok next to each other.  Classically, two of the employees were arguing about what should go where, probably that elf and one of the other forgettable characters.  This was interesting, of course someone gets paid to make sure that there isn’t a neon pink ad next to a predominantly deep red page.

  But then the difference between advertisements on the street and in a magazine is that there isn’t someone paid to do such things as to make sure there isn’t a billboard for liposuction next to a weight watchers meeting location.

  Yet, as will be explored further in future posts, the CTA clearly doesn’t care what this looks like.

  Ever since I can remember there has been a rail track that goes over Foster Avenue at Ravenswood that read in blue and yellow “Save the Environment- Wear Furs.”  Over the years there would be multiple tags (you know, graffiti) on the sign or general wear and tear would beat it up, and voila, it would be renewed.  Growing up just west of this strange sign I, as a child, did not think much of it on many passes toward Lake Shore Drive, or wherever.  The sign didn’t make sense to me, how did wearing furs save the environment?  I wondered if maybe the sign was appealing to those who saw animal droppings as spoiling the environment.  Everyone was baffled by the sign, even my environmental engineer for a mother.  Keep in mind this was ten years before ‘environmental’ and ‘issues’ were widely put together.

  

  Keim Furs has been at 1820 W. Foster Ave since 1925, and got very snippy and hung up the phone when asked why they didn’t have the sign up on the railroad track anymore.  It got painted over within the past week or so.  But still the question remains, what does this MEAN?  Browsing the web points to many more confused persons other than myself, but answers are within as well.

  This guy brings to attention the Canadian Fur Council’s ad campaign, touting that synthetic fur contains petrochemicals and non-renewable resources (animals make babies, and are therefore, renewable).  And here is a compelling argument for wearing fur, at first I thought it was dripping with sarcasm, not so true upon examining the comments.  But for the answer to such a question, why not go directly to the source.  The FIRST thing written on the Keim Furs web site tells us to stop global warming: but of course, natural fur products are biodegradable, why didn’t I think of that?

  According to the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) the average person is exposed to over 600 advertisements daily.  That was from a study done in 2007, where studies in the late 1960’s shows around 300 exposures.*

  

  To the left of the church of San Petronio, you might find this painted lady watching over a group of visiting school children, exhorting them to buy seductive body paint with their left-over milk money. Advertising is universal, unfortunately, even on the netting that keeps the falling plaster at bay.

  The number of ads actually noticed is much smaller than the number of exposures.  These exposures take place everywhere, billboards, flyers, newspapers, magazines, web browsers, the radio, television.

  This blog will explore what advertisements in certain communities, the impact, the irony, and so on.
