I am not a huge baseball fan. Honestly, I hold a grudge against baseball because my younger brother used to play it and the sport took up most of my family’s time and attention. Baseball soon became all we talked about around the dinner table and family outings started to only include my brothers games or the occasional trip to Tampa to see the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (when they were still called the ‘devil’ rays). Tickets we cheap because they didn’t win often and the drive was just two hours from our house. The games that I used to go to were almost empty and sometimes the top deck wasn’t even open to the public because no seats would be sold. Now I see people paying top dollar to see them and it just reminds me that things can change very fast. It is because of the world series that I have become proud of the rays and my grudge against baseball just might cease to exist.

The World Series starts tonight and what could have been, should have been, would have been, is not. But instead it is the Phillies who take on the up and coming Rays in this years fall classic. So the question for Cubs fans is who do you root for, the Phillies? They are a National league team and at least Phillies fans can relate to the Cubs misery a little bit- they haven’t won since 1980 (ok not exactly 1908 but at least it has the same numbers). Then again Chicago fans tend to hate Philadelphia all together.
Or do you root for the Rays- a very young team who hasn’t even been around for ten years provides for a nice little Cinderella story but that ten years probably won’t sit well with Cubs fans and on top of that Florida baseball still isn’t sitting well with me.
Tough call, but I still can’t watch baseball so I don’t have to choose.
Here is bleedcubbieblue’s humorous take on this series:

Oh, and Chris De Luca says Lou wants more left handed hitting. You think?

“What a miserable two days of baseball,” says DePaul University journalism professor and dedicated Cubs’ Dr. Bruce Evensen. Though Evensen roots for the blue and red, his words hold true for both the north and south side. Both teams are down 0-2 and face elimination. The cubs have just over an hour until their last chance gets underway. Sports journalists are getting ready to report on either an unprecedented comeback, or yet another dis-heartening, but sadly characteristic post-season choke. The momentum pendalum is about to swing to the side of the Cubs, or the clock is going to stop all together. “We were the best team in the National League in the marathon, but that goes out the window,” says the Cubs’ Mark DeRosa. “We have to win a sprint now.”

As our crosstown buddies play the final regular season game of the season as I write this, I got to thinking-with the playoffs approaching it would be nice to reflect on a very memorable and successful season for your Chicago Cubbies. So the question is simple, besides for winning 97 games what about this season is memorable to you? Is there a certain thing, a certain game, that stands out in your head? Here are a few examples that jumped out to me:
- Opening Day Fukudome makes his presence felt on Cubs nation with a game tying three-run homer in the 9th.
- Being down 9-1 to the Rockies and coming back to win 10-9.
- Aramis Ramirez’s walk-off homerun against the White Sox.
- Carlos Zambrano’s no-hitter.
Those are just a few stand outs of what has been a great season for the Cubs. Here is to looking forward to the playoffs and more memories. Your thoughts? Any memories I missed?

I wanted to write about the Chicago Cubs, about what has truly been a magical ride, and what promises to finish as something a Cubs fan will never forget. The focus will be on the fans, not just a box score or a stat line, although those are certainly important, but how will the fans of this wonderful team react as their magical season comes to an end? What will happen as the best team most of us have seen in our lifetime goes for the ultimate goal? And, God willing, what will happen when they reach that goal?
Lets keep it going, Go Cubs!
