  Still haven’t gone to the Green City Market?  Why don’t you take a little tour!

  While shopping around on Saturday I captured some of the sights.  Usually there’s some impromptu bluegrass in the background of the market to set the mood.  Maybe I went too late, or maybe the threatening rain clouds kept the fiddles at home, but no music was to be had.  So I’ve set the tone for you with a little G-Love “Hot Cookin’”.

  UPDATE:  My video way rejected by Google Video and YouTube for the G-Love song.  You can view it as it was intended at this link.  Too bad because it really distracted from the poor video quality and choppy editing

  The market was in the Halloween spirit this weekend as near by events at the Lincoln Park zoo invited the children to dress in costume.  I couldn’t pass up getting in the Halloween spirit by picking up a pumpkin and some fall apples (which make an appearance in the video).

  I’ll be roasting up the Sweet & Spicy pumpkin seeds of this fancy trio.  And probably adding some fresh apples to this Giada Halloween Spice Cake recipe.

  Hey!  This next post would not be possible if it weren’t for a chalkboard sign that read “World’s Best Apples”.   After scoring my squash at the Green City Market on Saturday I was ready to book it, but my boyfriend pointed the sign and said, “Why wouldn’t you want the world’s best apples?” and with that I was sold.

  However, I already know where the world’s best apples are.  But I’ll have a post on that orchard later. So I headed for the pears.  Specifically the Asian Pears – for a Pear and Candied Walnut Salad I’d wanted to make – my take on the CPK Field Greens salad.  Not the most original, but heck, was tasty!
  The chalkboard sign belonged to the Nichols farm stand.  It’s the first stand in the market (if you go from the front, and not the side) and one on the largest.  Regretfully, I only had a couple minutes to talk with them.  I did learn however they travel all the way from Marengo, IL, nearly 60 miles away, to sell at this market.  Seems to be a recurring theme…traveling a great distance to sell at Chicago Markets.

  Hey!  Exciting news from the Green City Market this week.  The market has gone year round!

  After Halloween the market is moving just down the street to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum at Fullerton Ave. and Cannon Dr.

  However, my quick visit to the market this week included a hunt for butternut and acorn squash.

  They weren’t hard to come by since they are in season, but the hunt brought me to the Genesis Growers of St. Anne, IL.

  Genesis Growers are located 70 miles from Chicago and have been coming to the market for five years.  I got to talking to Vicki, the farm’s owner, about going year round.

  In response she has committed her farm to be at the market through November; possibly longer if her first winter garden goes well.

  Back to those butternut and acorn squash.  I’ve had a squash soup on my mind since the weather first dipped below 65 degrees.  Just in time for a day of football tomorrow I’ll be making Winter Squash Soup with Gruyere Croutons.

  Purple and Green Peppers!

  Have you ever seen a purple pepper?  Well, neither had I until I made my way to the Green City Market this past lovely Saturday morning.  From the hustle and bustle of couples, strollers and dogs all searching for the best tomato, potato, and squash, to the perky sounds of a fiddle, you wouldn’t know it was only 9 AM.

  I purchased my purple peppers (and green peppers and zebra tomatoes) from the guys at Heritage Prairie Market.  They’re a local farm from Elburn, IL and make their way to the Green City Market every Wednesday and Saturday during the market season.  On Thursdays they’re in Geneva.

  This is their first year at the Green City Market and they’ve had a pretty good experience.  However, since school is back in session they’ve definitely noticed things are slowing down at the market.  They don’t rely on the market season alone, they are a year round operation at their grocery store in Elburn.

  They might be one of the smaller stands at the market, but don’t let it fool you.  They know their goods and have helpful cooking hints.  I came looking for tomatoes for my stuffed tomato reciepe.  However, after the right tomatoes were just too small for the job, they pointed me to the peppers.

  I’ll be making this recipe this week!  Can’t wait!

  Hi! I’m Amanda.  A little more than a year ago I discovered I liked to cook.  It started out harmless enough – just a sweet little dinner for my then new boyfriend.

  Fast forward to today.  Not a day goes by where I haven’t collected another recipe or learned about a quirky ingredient.  In my cooking I try my best to use fresh and local ingredients.

  My favorite spot to grab these is Chicago’s Green City Market.  (However, any local market would do!)

  My goal is to tell you about what’s going on at the market, a little bit about our local farmers, and spotlight their produce so you too can enjoy them in your dinners!
